On 12 May 2014, exactly 650 years will have passed since the foundation of the Jagiellonian University. The Polish Senate has unanimously declared this year to be the year of the JU Great Jubilee. The senators expressed their hope that it will be a celebration for the entire Polish academia.
The Senate’s resolution reminds that the University has played important role in the Polish academia, greatly contributing to the development of science and education throughout the region. The Jagiellonian Library and Jagiellonian University Museum possess rich collections of invaluable items closely tied to the history of Poland.
The Senate has emphasised the University’s ceaseless effort to fulfil the duties imposed on it by its founder, King Casimir the Great, who decreed that the University should be open to anyone who wishes to gain knowledge, regardless of their place of origin.
Senator Bogdan Pęk has claimed that investing in research has the highest rate of profit. He also said that not investing enough funds in research can lead to a negative outcome. He proposed that this should again become the primary focus of attention.
All 57 senators present at the session voted for the resolution.
