On 17 June 2014, a special JU Senate session marked the awarding of honorary professorship to Prof. Janusz Kozłowski, a world-renown archaeologist, specialist in research of the Stone Age and author of 56 books and 480 scientific papers. The event took place in Collegium Maius.

The session was officially opened by Prof. Wojciech Nowak, JU Rector. In his address, he stressed that honorary professorship is awarded to distinguished scholars who contributed greatly to the development of science and culture. Then, Prof. Paweł Valde-Nowak delivered a laudatory speech for the Professor. Prof. Jan Święch, Dean of the Faculty of History, read the Latin text of the diploma.

In his speech, the Professor recalled the beginnings of his scientific career, his cooperation with many distinguished scientists and his pioneer research in Europe and Asia.

Prof. Kozłowski has graduated from the JU Institute of Archaeology in 1957. He received his PhD at the Institut de Paléontologie Humanie in Paris in 1961. Professorship was conferred to him in 1982. Aside form the Jagiellonian University, he has been a lecturer in the universities of Liege, Brussels and Ghent as well as College de France and Harvard University. He holds an honorary degree at the Université Bordeaux 1. The professor is albo a member of various international organizations, such as the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences, the UNESCO International Council of Philosophy (vice-president), the Union Internationale des Sciences Prehistoriques et Protohistoriques, the British Prehistoric society (honorary member), the Deutsches Archäologisches Institut (corresponding member) and the Instituto Italiano de Preistoria e Protostoria. He is also a member of numerous editing teams.
