The year 2014 marks the 90th anniversary of the death of Joseph Conrad, a famous Polish author who wrote in English.
After returning from their exile to Siberia, he and his father settled in Kraków. Here he received his education and from here he began his journey into the world. He later visited Kraków with his family in August 1914 – on the day before the outbreak of the Great War.
The conference Polish Struggles with Conrad, devoted to the writer’s literary works, will be organised by the JU Joseph Conrad Research Centre.
We want to recall the evolution of perception of Conrad’s work in Poland over the span of decades and draw attention to the influence of historical and socio-political context on that perception. The conference will be attended by scholars from foreign research centres – Great Britain, France, Italy and Bulgaria.
